Know your rights: Debt collectors cannot harass you

You have the right to be treated fairly

It is against the law for a debt collector to harass you. This is based on a law called the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

Debt collectors include collection agencies, lawyers who collect debts, and companies that buy unpaid debts.

Debt collectors cannot:

  • Call you more than seven times in one week,
  • Call you before 8 AM or after 9 PM,
  • Tell your employer, friends, or family that you owe a debt, or
  • Use bad language, threaten you, or lie to you.

You can take action if a debt collector is bothering you

If a debt collector is bothering you, you can send them a letter asking them to stop contacting you. After they get your letter, they can only contact you to say they got it or to tell you about a legal action.

If they break these rules, you may be able to take legal action under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

📌 Telling a debt collector to stop contacting you won’t make the debt go away. They can still take legal action, like filing a lawsuit, to try to collect the money.
