Check your credit report for free

Your credit report is the story of how you pay your bills, loans, and credit cards. Lenders, landlords, and sometimes even employers look at it. Checking it often helps you catch mistakes, spot fraud, and see where your money stands.

The good news: you can get your credit report for free.

There is only one official free site

Federal law set up one website to give you your credit report for free:

AnnualCreditReport.com

This website is safe and will not ask you to pay.

Watch out for other sites that look like this one. Some will try to charge you or take your personal info. If a site asks for a credit card just to see your report, leave.

You can check for free every week

You can pull your credit report from each of the three bureaus for free once a week.

An easy habit is to check one bureau every four months. That way, you see a fresh report a few times a year without feeling overwhelmed.

Three ways to ask for your report

You can get your report:

  • Online at AnnualCreditReport.com (fastest, usually right away)
  • By phone at 1-877-322-8228
  • By mail, using a short form you can print from the site

When you order, you will be asked some questions to prove who you are, like a past address or loan amount. This keeps your info safe.

What to look for on your credit report

Once your report opens, take your time. Check for:

  • Your name, address, and Social Security number
  • Accounts you opened, like credit cards and loans
  • Your payment history
  • Anything you do not recognize
  • Debts you already paid but that still show as owed

If something looks wrong, you have the right to dispute it. You can send a letter to the bureau that made the report. They must look into it, usually within 30 days.

Credit report vs. credit score

A credit report and a credit score are not the same thing. The report is the full story. The score is a number based on that story.

AnnualCreditReport.com gives you the report for free, but not always the score.
